Reuben J. Zoss (1910 -1995)
Reuben J. Zoss was born in Woodbine, NJ on October 27, 1910, to Julius and Yetta Zoss.
Note: Woodbine was an agricultural settlement funded by Baron De Hirsh for Jewish
immigrants. It was one of a series of agricultural communities he started. It was in Cape May
County NJ. This location served as the foundation for his preference for landscapes and
lighthouses.
Reuben graduated from Woodbine High School on June 14, 1929. He later left the farm in
Woodbine. He held a number of jobs in the NY/NJ Metro area. He attended the National
Academy of Design in New York City for approximately 3 years in the mid-to late 1930’s. While
there he compiled a portfolio of works in charcoal, pen and ink and pastels in addition to some
watercolors. Just prior to WWII he was scheduled to have a one-man show in Manhattan, but
that was postponed due to the war. During the war he proudly served in the Army Air Corps and
later served as a civilian employee of the Navy and Army at the Bayonne, NJ Naval Base (later
known as MOTBY (Military Ocean Terminal Bayonne). After the war he continued to work in
pastels, and oil. He never sold any of his works but gifted many to family and friends.
In the early 1950’s he was offered a job at Disney studios in the art department working
on background scenery for animated films. He did not accept the position because his wife did
not want to relocate to the west coast. He did, however, continue his art until he suffered a stroke
in the late 80’s, and although he suffered little visible effect from the stroke, he never sketched or
painted again. Note: In the 1970’s Reuben’s Lighthouse watercolor received Second Place
Honors in the Jersey City, NJ Senior Art Show.
